Benefits of Interning

Internships are a valuable experience that allow students to:

  • Discover jobs and career paths they like and excel at (or conversely don't like)
  • Develop and refine professional skills and abiliities
  • Learn about a company or organization
  • Establish critical networking connections
  • Learn from professionals working in the field and gain industry knowledge
  • Apply classroom learning and theory to practice
  • Potentially recieve financial compensation if the opportunitiy is paid
  • Potentially recieve an offer of full-time employment after graduation

Internships differentiate students from other applicants when applying for full-time positions.  USP and RED majors are encouraged to intern during their time at UCSD.  Professionals working in the fields of planning and real estate development often highlight interning as a recommendation for networking, learning, and helping them get their first full-time position after they graduate.

Consider crossing areas when looking for internships.  It can be beneficial for someone who wants to go into real estate development to intern or work for a city's planning department to gain knowledge of how those departments work to better inform future work related to developments, entitlements, and the community/political aspects of obtaining approvals for discretionary projects. Conversely, it can be beneficial for someone who wants to go into planning to work in a real estate development company to understand factors that influence potential developments such as the economic analysis of making a project "pencil."

Note: USP majors are required to complete an internship as part of their capstone series in their senior year.

International Students

International students should review ISPO's Guidance on working before graduating, volunteering, and unpaid internships before applying to any positions. Each visa type has different regulations. Additional questions related to visas and working, volunteering, and internships should be directed to the International Students & Programs Office (ISPO).
