Admissions

You can apply our programs through the UC San Diego graduate admissions portal.

The portal will open in September. Complete applications for the MURP should be received by December 16 for priority consideration, and for the PhD should be received by December 2 for priority consideration.

MURP

If you are excited to pursue a career in urban and regional planning or a related field, and you want to learn from practitioners and engaged teachers at a leading university in a diverse, multinational metropoitan region, our MURP program might be right for you!
The portal will open in September. Complete applications received by December 16 will receive priority consideration, but applicants may be accepted on a rolling basis after that date.
A complete application will include all of the following:
  • A bachelor’s degree, or the recognized equivalent, from an accredited institution
  • Transcripts from all college or university-level coursework, documenting a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4-point scale in the last two years of undergraduate study
  • A statement of purpose of no more than 2,000 words
  • A writing sample, such as an undergraduate paper, a publication, or a professional report
  • A CV or résumé of employment history
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation, at least two (2) of which are from instructors at a university-level institution who have taught or supervised the candidate
Applicants optionally may submit, in addition:
  • A digital portfolio of original creative work in a visual design medium (such as architectural drawings, GIS maps, videos, or data visualizations)
For international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied full-time for one uninterrupted academic year at a university-level institution in which English is the language of instruction in a country where English is a dominant language, a test of English language proficiency is also required; the tests that are accepted include TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), and PTE (Pearson Test of English).

PhD

If you are excited to pursue a career in urban studies and planning education and research, and you are excited to study with a team of world-class researchers and award-winning teachers at a leading research university in an ecologically diverse, transnational metropolitan region, our PhD program may be right for you! We encourage prospective applicants to explore our faculty's web pages to learn about our research and teaching.
The portal will open in September. Complete applications received by December 2 will receive priority consideration. April 15 is the deadline for accepted students to declare their intent to register.
A complete application will include all of the following:
  • A bachelor’s degree, or the recognized equivalent, from an accredited institution (a Master's degree in urban and regional planning or a related field is preferred but not required)
  • Transcripts from all college or university-level coursework, documenting a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4-point scale in the last two years of undergraduate study, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4-point scale in graduate courses.
  • A statement of purpose of no more than 2,000 words
  • A writing sample, such as an undergraduate paper, a publication, or a professional report

Applications for the MURP program that are completed by December 16, and applications for the PhD program that are completed by December 2, will receive full consideration for fellowship and financial aid.
