Joshua Newton

Postdoctoral Scholar, Urban Studies and Planning

Dr. Josh Newton is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Homelessness Hub in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at University of California, San Diego. He received his Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Public Policy at the University of Texas at Arlington. During his Ph.D. he was a Crossing Latinidades Mellon Fellow and recipient of the Community Development Society’s Student Recognition Award. His research draws on critical theories and mixed methods to examine the outcomes on low-income urban and peri-urban communities of neoliberal governance, policy, and interventions from emerging community and economic development stakeholders. His research includes work on the impact of philanthropic community development initiatives on low-income residents and neighborhoods; housing precarity and grassroots solutions in informal subdivisions in the United States; alternative ownership models such as community land trusts and housing cooperatives; and the use of community development tactics by craft breweries. Josh has also taught courses at University of California, San Diego and University of Texas at Arlington on race/ethnicity, the history of U.S. urban communities, history of urban planning, and urban planning and design theory.
